ATLANTA (AP) State transportation officials are studying plans to widening a highway across Atlanta's far northern suburbs. They're also considering construction of a new highway to the north or south of State Route 20.

Plans for State Route 20, which connects Cumming to Canton, are prompting concern from residents in the area, who fear their properties could be in the way of highway construction.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Natalie Dale tells WSB-TV that State Route 20 has reached its capacity. She said that as the area continues to grow, traffic volumes will increase.

The Highway 20 Coalition, a group of homeowners and businesses concerned about the project, favors improvements, but is opposed to creating a full-scale expressway.

Officials say a decision on the plan isn't expected until 2018.
