Former HCSO 'Officer of the Year' dies

GAINESVILLE - Jerry Walls, a former Officer of the Year with the Hall County Sheriff's Office who spent more than 30 years in law enforcement, has died.

Walls, who was 70, died at his home in Gainesville Friday.

His 32-year career in law enforcement began in 1966 when he went to work for the Gainesville Police Department. Three years later, he joined the Hall County Sheriff's Office and remained there until his retirement in 1998. During that time he served as a uniformed deputy before moving into the detective division. He finished his career as an officer in the Warrant Division. After he retired from the sheriff's office, Walls worked as a security guard at Gainesville Jewelry until last year.

Walls served under four different sheriffs during his career and in 1988 was named the department's Officer of the Year.

The funeral will be Monday at 11:00 at First United Methodist Church in Gainesville.
