CLARKESVILLE -- The Gainesville Men's Golf team blistered a school record first set in 1979 and tied many times but never bettered -- at least until Saturday in the Apple Mountain Invitational tournament in Clarkesville.

The Red Elephants turned in an astonishing 270 team score -- also a tournament record -- to crush the old record of 289. The mark could also be a state record -- though there was no official verification as of publication time.

Spencer Ralston led the way for Gainesville, shooting a 9-under 63 to win low medalist honors. Lawson King was the individual runner-up, with a 4-under 68. Jackson Bishop shot 69, and Grant Lasseter rounded out the scoring with a 70. Nathan Williams also shot a 73.

Gainesville's junior varsity team also shot 344, with Brady Holcomb shooting an 81, Drew Lasseter a 83, Reeves Ralston 87, Hunter Worley a 94, and Bo Roberts a 99.

Players playing as individuals included Ryan Hogan with an 87, AD Winston with 88, and Brody Simmons with a 90.

The varsity Red Elephants play again on Monday and Tuesday at the Hall County Championships at Royal Lakes Country Club in Chestnut Mountain.
