BUFORD - It took more than four hours for Gwinnett police negotiators to bring a peaceful end to a standoff in a Buford neighborhood overnight.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Troy Tobler said the incident started around 11:20 Friday night when residents on Rolling Creek Dr. reported gunshots from one of the homes.

He said when police arrived, a partially-clothed man was outside the house; he told them a man inside had fired shots at him.

In addition, police were able to get a woman to exit the home. She told them the gunman was her boyfriend, and Tobler said she gave authorities enough information for them to obtain an arrest warrant for Jeffrey Wahaus.

Tobler said Wahaus was finally taken into custody around 4:15 a.m. Saturday.

"Eventually they were able to convince him to come out," said Tobler. "He surrendered peacefully and he was taken into custody. There were no injuries to any of the individuals involved or officer or residents of the neighborhood."

He said Wahaus has been charged with false imprisonment, but he said more charges are likely forthcoming in the incident.

Tobler also said the man who officers encountered initially was arrested because he had an outstanding warrant from another county. He said that arrest was not related to the standoff.

While the involved parties are still being questioned, it appears at this point that the incident stemmed from a domestic argument.

"It appears that maybe the involved parties were possibly intoxicated," said Tobler. "Some kind of argument erupted. We don't know what the cause of that was or why."
