JEFFERSON - Jackson County Sheriff's Office investigators have issued a warrant for a South Jackson Elementary School teacher after she allegedly left bruises on two students.

The teacher, Laura Helen McKown, 30, of Athens, is charged with two counts of battery after two children came forward to report the teacher had grabbed them on Tuesday.

Sheriff Janis Mangum did not release specific details on what might have lead to the teacher grabbing the children.

"It just left a bruise, there was a visible mark on the child's arm," said Mangum. "There was a report the next morning of another child that had a visible mark."

Mangum said interviews with victims and witnesses, along with photographs, led to the charges.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, McKown was not in custody. Mangum said she expected the teacher to turn herself in to authorities.
