ATLANTA (AP) Forecasters say snow is possible in parts of the north Georgia mountains, with widespread heavy rain expected across other parts of the state.

The National Weather Service says an inch of snow could fall in elevations above 1,500 feet, generally northeast of a line from Dalton to Jasper to Clermont. Forecasters expect the snow between 1 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday.

Further south, heavy rain is expected across most of the state Thursday afternoon through early Friday morning. The weather service says 1 to 1.5 inches of rain is expected in most Georgia cities, with isolated higher amounts.

Forecasters say a mixture of precipitation is possible in several northeast Georgia counties.

At mid-morning Thursdasy, the weather service issued a winter weather advisory for a number of mountain counties for possible snow accumulations of up to three inches. (See separate posting or click on link below for full detsails.)
