Tennis: Chestatee boys, Lumpkin girls take wins

The Chestatee boys tennis team swept past Lumpkin County 5-0 without dropping a set Tuesday night while the Lumpkin County girls beat the Lady War Eagles 3-2 in a match that went down to final doubles.

In the boys match, Chestatee (3-1, 1-1 Region 8-AAAA) got wins from Juan Carrion, Tyler Burgess, and Hasten Haynes in singles. The War Eagles doubles teams of Reed Johnson and Austin Passmore and Logan Gruenenfelded and Barron King also got straight-set wins.

In the girls match, the Lady Indians got the win rallying in the decisive No. 2 doubles match with a 6-7(10-8), 6-2, 7-5 victory. Chestatee's Melanie Smith and Carolina Gijon trailed 4-5, 0-40 in the final set before fighting back and saving six match points to tie the score at 5-5. Two games later they weren't able to save a seventh as Claudia Herd and Sara McCrary secured the victory for the Lady Indians.

Chestatee notched wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles as Fernanda Arcaraz defeated Charlotte Gaston, 6-3, 6-2, and Haley King and Grace Brown handled Sydney Voorhees and Kate Fitts, 6-1, 6-1.

Lumpkin County's Brittany Steward defeated the Lady War Eagles' Lily Kiang 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and the Lady Indians' Shay Brackett defeated Chestatee's Adasery Osorno 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles match.

Chestatee next will play host to Stephens County on Thursday.
