COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Residents in South Carolina and Georgia may see fighter jets from the South Carolina Air National Guard participating in an air defense exercise.

F-16s from the 169th Fighter Wing are taking part Tuesday morning. Three small Civil Air Patrol Cessna aircraft are acting as simulated targets for the exercise.

The event is monitored by the Federal Aviation Administration. Most activity shouldn't be visible from the ground, but residents should be aware the activity is an exercise. It ensures the South Carolina Air National Guard remains in top form in case it's needed to respond to airborne threats over the United States.

The aircraft have periodically conducted such training as part of the nation's air defense mission since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
