Darrin Terrell Eskew of Greenville, S.C., "became argumentative and combative" with Banks County officers during the traffic stop on the northbound side of I-85, said Banks County Sheriff's Sgt. Carissa McFaddin. "Eskew attempted to strike one deputy in the face, at which time an extensive struggle ensued in which a taser was deployed."
In Banks County, Eskew was charged with two counts of felony obstruction of an officer and miscellaneous traffic charges, McFaddin said.
Investigative work by Banks County deputies both during and after the traffic stop led them to South Carolina, where a woman - believed to be the registered owner of the vehicle - had been found dead in an explosion at a motel.
"Deputies were advised that the vehicle Eskew was driving returned to a female from Traveler's Rest, S.C.," McFaddin said. "In attempts to confirm the stattus of the vehicle, deputies were advised the vehicle was possibly linked to a crime scene involving an explosion and the discovery of the body of a female at Quality Inn in Greenville, S.C."
McFaddin said officers stopped the vehicle driven by Eskew for impeding traffic and a non-functioning brake light, but his behavior led them to further investigation.
"As deputies approached the man, they observed that his behavior was erratic and unpredictable," McFaddin said. "Due to the driver's demeanor, deputies began to conduct a roadside investigation into the possibility of the driver being under the influence."
That's when Eskew became argumentative and combative, leading to the Banks County incident, she said.
Eskew is being held in the Banks County Jail pending further investigation by the Banks County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigative Division, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Greenville County Homicide Division, McFaddin said.
WYFF TV in Greenvile reports the 9-1-1 call to report a possible explosion in a room at Quality Inn and Suites, on South Pleasantburg Drive near Mauldin Road, was received about 5:30 a.m. Monday.
A man now linked to a murder in Greenville, S.C., was driving this vehicle on I-85 in Banks County this morning when he was stopped for traffic violations there.
