CLEVELAND - A sport utility vehicle that fled a Georgia State Patrol road check east of Cleveland early Saturday crashed after leading troopers on a chase.

Sgt. 1st Class Chad Johnson of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville said troopers were conducting a road check at Georgia Highway 384 (Duncan Bridge Road) and Georgia Highway 255 around midnight when "a car came up and just blew through it headed south on 255 toward Cleveland."

Cpl. Brian Roberts and Sr. Trooper Tony Saunders began pursuing the fleeing 1997 Kia Sportage.

At the end of Georgia 255, the fleeing vehicle turned right onto Georgia 115 toward Cleveland.

After turning onto 115, Johnson said the fleeing driver went over onto the wrong side of the road, traveling west in the eastbound lane.

Roberts, maintaining the westbound lane, accelerated to move into position to implement a PIT maneuver if conditions allowed, Johnson said. Before Roberts could get into position, the Kia veered over into Roberts' lane, striking his car.

The Kia then overturned several times, ejecting two people - including 21-year-old driver Brandon R. Nash of Sautee.

Nash, who was unrestrained, was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The front-seat passenger, 32-year-old Julie Susan Harris of Sautee, was restrained and was not ejected as the vehicle overturned. She was injured and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by White County EMS.

An 18-year-old female seated behind the driver, Christian Poulos of Cleveland, was unrestrained and was ejected during the crash. She was injured and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center by White County EMS.

A 15-year-old male seated behind the passenger, Isaiah Hahola of Sautee, was unrestrained but was not ejected as the vehicle overturned. He was injured and was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The crash happened around 12:15 a.m. Saturday on Georgia Highway 115 near Shenandoah Drive.

Charges are pending against Nash, Johnson said.
