Sgt. 1st Class Chad Johnson of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville said the wreck at Grant Mill Road, paged out by Banks County at 7:22 a.m., involved a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle.
"The Volkswagen was traveling south on Yonah Homer Road and negotiating a left curve," Johnson said. "The vehicle began to rotate counterclockwise and lost traction, crossed the center line and traveled off the left shoulder, striking a tree with the driver's side."
Johnson said 17-year-old driver Trevor Michael Mahan was pronounced dead at the scene. Mahan's 16-year-old brother, Liam Ray Mahan, was in the passenger seat and was hurt. He was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with what Johnson believes were non-life-threatening injuries.
"Both were restrained with a lap belt only in that vehicle," Johnson said.
The teen's father is a teacher at Banks County High School, while officials said their mother works in the Barrow County School System.
