DULUTH - After experiencing the severe weather challenges of the past 48 hours, the U.S. Postal Service was opening post offices and began returning mail delivery to normal levels in Atlanta and other parts of north Georgia Friday.

Postal operations had been hampered because many roads and highways were impassible at the height of the winter storm, limiting the number of the employees who were able to get to work and impacting the Postal Service's ability to move mail between processing facilities and local post offices.

"With the State of Emergency urging people to stay off the roads as much as possible, we could not ask our employees to put themselves in harm's way by venturing out on the roads if they felt it was unsafe," said Atlanta District Manager Scott Raymond. "As a result, we had very limited delivery over the past few days, and were only able to open a small number of post offices for a few hours in some areas.

The Atlanta district includes Gainesville.

Now that the weather has improved and we have more employees available, we will be able to open more post offices and extend mail delivery to most of the customers we were not able to reach earlier in the week. We ask our customers to be patient as we work to restore operations to normal levels."

Raymond also urges customers to clear areas around their mailboxes of ice, snow and other obstacles that may hinder letter carriers during delivery.

The Postal Service's Atlanta District covers north Georgia ZIP Codes beginning with 300, 301, 302, 303, 305 and 306.
