Local Salvation Army canteen travels to help Ga. victims

GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Salvation Army has heard the Georgia Emergency Management Agency's request for help in the Columbia County and Augusta areas and plans to take their mobile canteen there ASAP.

Governor Nathan Deal overflew the area today, possibly the hardest hit area in our state by yesterday's winter storm. Up to 90-percent of the population is without power by some estimates.

"Luckily, Hall County fared pretty well," said Captain Matt Cunningham, Corps Officer with the Gainesville Salvation Army. Hall County's good fortune means surplus food items available for use elsewhere.

"Our canteen was on standby," Cunningham explained. "There's been a call put out through GEMA...so we're heading there this afternoon to serve meals for the next three to four days."

Cunningham said his team was comprised of three volunteers, and they plan to serve hot meals to those in need and to those who are in the area as emergency workers.

Cunningham said his destination, subject to change, was Patriot's Park in Grovetown.

"We take enough to serve 500 meals a day for the next three days," Cunningham added.
