After winter weather forced the cancellation of many American Red Cross blood drives, some operations were scheduled to resume Friday. This week's storm resulted in 1,785 uncollected blood and platelet donations in Georgia.

All community blood drives in the Athens and Gainesville areas are canceled. We will open the Athens blood donation center from 1 to 7 p.m. It is located in the Clarke Crossing Shopping Center. The Gainesville center is always closed on Thursdays.

If it's safe to travel, eligible donors are asked to make an appointment to give blood or platelets. Donors of all blood types are currently needed, especially O negative, O positive, B negative and A negative. There is also an urgent need for platelet donors.

Thank you for sharing this message. The Red Cross relies on the generosity of volunteers to help maintain a stable blood supply. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an interview, please contact me at (770) 852-4040 or [email protected].
