GAINESVILLE - The sun finally broke through the remaining clouds shortly after 10:00 Thursday morning in Gainesville, its first appearance since Sunday and the start of a week of winter weather the area had not seen since January 2011.

And, there were patches of blue sky to go with the sunshine, which cast stark shadows on the still glistening snow.

This was not totally unexpected because forecasters had been saying north Georgia could expect clearing skies and rising temperatures by noon today.

While the sun may continue to play hide-and-seek until the clouds move completely out, weather radar indicates that over north Georgia the snow, sleet and freezing rain are over.
