GAINESVILLE - Not only did folks make a run for milk and bread ahead of this current winter storm, they also headed to the hardware store for essentials, such as sleds.

Ted Palmer with Chase's Hardware on Thompson Bridge Road in north Hall County said he had to make an emergency call to his supplier at the "Do It Best" warehouse to get in some extra supplies in order to meet demand on Tuesday.

"We had a line of people in here, and we actually passed out numbers when the truck drove up," said Palmer. "We got in 24 sleds, and they were all gone in five minutes.

Palmer said customers kept his staff hopping on Tuesday as they made preparations to ride out one of the area's toughest winter storms in decades.

"It was a zoo in here - people buying ice melt, rock salt, snow shovels, sleds...kerosene, heaters, you name it," said Palmer.

Palmer said it's never easy to know how to prepare for a Georgia winter.

"It's kind of a crap shoot," he said. "You know, you get in there and roll the dice, basically, and figure out what you might sell."

Even though Palmer was open for business Wednesday morning, with plenty of shovels and rock salt in stock, he said he wasn't sure how long the weather was going to allow him to stay at the store.

"If the weather gets really bad, then we'll probably go home. But, right now, we're working pretty hard and hoping people will come on in."

Despite icy conditions on the roads and in the parking lot, hardware stores like Chase's in north Hall County, were open for business on Wednesday morning.
Ted Palmer at Chase's Hardware on Thompson Bridge Road sold out of sleds for the latest snow storm, but he still had a good supply of shovels and rock salt as the winter blast continues.
