In west Georgia, winds were gusting up to 28 mph in Columbus shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Strong wind gusts of around 25 mph were also being reported Wednesday morning in Macon and Vidalia. The top gust at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville was 18 mph as of 10:00 a.m.
The National Weather Service is projecting wind gusts of up to 30 mph across much of the state Wednesday.
Forecasters say the strong winds combined with heavy ice will exacerbate the potential for trees toppling.
