Snow? Please no... Busy area sports schedule could be hampered by weather

Posted 11:10AM on Monday 10th February 2014 ( 10 years ago )
Children and weathermen may smile at the thought of snow. The rest of us, however, cringe -- especially now; and not just because of the Interstate 285 parking lot that developed two weeks ago.

Any missed school time from the predicted snow on late Monday/Tuesday could mean missed game time, and the reality is that there is simply no time for missed contests this week -- not with region basketball tournaments and the final wrestling meet of the winter upon us.

Postseason tournaments will tip off today for the area's regions (see below for a more complete schedule) -- but the potential winter weather could wreak havoc with those schedules.

There are contingency plans in place -- for example Region 7-AAA, which will begin tournament play on Tuesday, will move its tournament back one day if the weather will not cooperate. If the snow piles up for two straight days, 7-AAA will keep games at their original sites but play all contests on Thursday. For example the girls games scheduled for North Hall on Tuesday will take place at the same time on Thursday. The same will hold true for boys games at Dawson County, while the boys and girls games that are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at Buford will be squeezed into one day of contests at Buford.

Yet with our location, the roads and weather involved, there could be changes occurring by the hour, so stay with us for updates this week.

Also, just in time for another arctic blast, spring sports are starting to kick off in earnest this week -- at least in theory. Tennis has already gotten underway, while soccer will begin its campaign this week and baseball, golf, track and lacrosse are close to follow.

It's a warm and cozy thought -- very much unlike the weather headed our way.
