ATLANTA (AP) The Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police are investigating what caused a fire that severely burned a Georgia Tech graduate student inside an apartment in midtown Atlanta.

Firefighters were called to the building on 10th Street around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and found a man with severe burns to his hands, arms and chest.

FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett tells WSB-TV that the blaze involved what appears to be a "possible incendiary device." Authorities said they couldn't share further details until they had a better understanding of what happened.

WXIA-TV reports that the student was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The Georgia Institute of Technology declined to release information about the victim. School officials said in a statement they were working with law enforcement to notify his family.
