MT. AIRY - A familiar face is leading South Habersham Middle School effective Feb. 4.

During a brief called meeting prior to the Teacher of the Year Banquet Monday night, the Habersham County Board of Education voted 5-0 to name Daphne Penick as new principal of SHMS.

Penick has served as assistant principal at South Hab since 2007. She began her career at SHMS in 1993 and worked as a teacher and counselor there prior to becoming an administrator.

"I am very excited about Ms. Penick becoming the next principal at South Habersham Middle School," said Superintendent Matthew Cooper. "Ms. Penick has spent most of her career at South Hab and she knows the school well. The relationships she has built with the students, parents, and staff at South Habersham Middle School will serve her well as the new principal."

Penick's predecessor and former boss, Connie Franklin, also had positive things to say about Penick.

"She has a heart for students and a desire to see them succeed," Franklin said. "I am certain she will continue to lead the staff and students at SHMS in positive growth and achievement."

Franklin recently was named principal of the Habersham Ninth Grade Academy.
