Basketball: Johnson boys, Chestatee girls run away for big wins

GAINESVILLE -- The Johnson boys basketball team surged past Chestatee 89-50 on Monday in Gainesville to keep pace at the top of Region 8-AAAA.

The Knights (18-5, 5-1 Region 8-AAAA) soared to a 26-6 lead after the first quarter, and led 54-24 at the half.

Ty Cockfield paced Johnson with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while James Hodges added 23 points and seven rebounds. Rod English also scored 17 points, all in the first half. And Carter Cagle chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.

Chestatee was led by Jordan Pulliam with 19 points, and Hunter Creamer with 13 points.

Johnson is back in action tomorrow night at home against Walnut Grove at 7:30 p.m.

Chestatee faces Lanier on Tuesday.

The Lady War Eagles exploded to a 19-2 first quarter lead and never looked back in sprinting past the Lady Knights on Monday in Gainesville.

Bridgette Kelly scored 14 points to pace Chestatee (19-4, 6-0 Region 8-AAAA), while Eramiss Hernandez and Tyler Bennett each scored nine points and Dawndria Bell eight.

The win kept the Lady War Eagles firmly in first place in the race for the No. 1 tournament seed for Region 8-AAAA.

Chestatee plays host to Lanier at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Johnson will look to bounce back at home against Walnut Grove on Tuesday.
