LAWRENCEVILLE - A fatal crash was caused in Lawrenceville Saturday night by a driver fleeing the scene of an earlier hit-and-run accident.

According to a report from Fox 5, Gwinnett County police say the male driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was traveling southbound on Lawrenceville Suwanee Road, apparently fleeing the scene of an initial crash that had taken place a short time before.

The suspect eventually lost control of his vehicle, which crossed the center median and struck another car. The suspect's vehicle then flipped over the victim's car, ripping off the victim's roof in the process, before hitting the ground and eventually coming to a stop.

Immediately after being struck, the victim, who also has not been named by authorities, lost control of the vehicle. The car then hit a gas main before ramming into a nearby home.

Fox 5 reports that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene while the suspect was transported to an area hospital.

Authorities shut down a portion of the road for several hours while crews cleaned up the resulting mess, which officials say was a combination of wreckage from the crash and high volumes of gas stemming from the broken main.

It is unknown at this time what charges, if any, will be filed by police.
