GAINESVILLE - A poultry truck carrying live chickens overturned early Monday on Highway 129 at Lenox Drive, injuring the two drivers involved.

The Georgia State Patrol said the accident occurred around 5:35 a.m. on Highway 129 at Wilson Road just east of Gainesville when George Shellie Knapp, 76, of Jefferson pulled into the path of a tractor trailer carrying poultry.

Both Knapp and the driver of the rig sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to the State Patrol.

Knapp is a deputy with the Hall County Sheriff's Office and apparently was on his way to work when the accident occurred. He has been charged with failure to yield when entering or crossing a roadway.

The driver if the rig was identified as Abel Mendieta, 43, of Gainesville.

At one point the entire highway was closed as authorities worked to clear wreckage and gather chickens that had scattered across the area.
