ATLANTA (AP) -- Bitterly cold temperatures were expected to give way to a slow warm-up Friday, but the mercury wasn't expected to reach much above freezing during the day across north Georgia.

Temperatures before dawn Friday dipped to 10 degrees in Cartersville, Dalton and Rome; 11 in Gainesville, and 13 degrees in Atlanta. The National Weather Service was forecasting a high of around 32 degrees Friday in Atlanta.

In south Georgia, temperatures early Friday dropped to 29 in Albany, 30 in Vidalia and 34 in Savannah.
