BUFORD - The Georgia Department of Transportation used a Quick Response Project to "(improve) the efficiency" of State Route 20 near the Mall of Georgia.

"We have made the most of the existing asphalt on busy State Route 20 near the Mall of Georgia. There was a U-turn lane that was supposed to go to a development that was never built. Working with Gwinnett County, we were able to take the turn lane and narrow the concrete median to create a longer dual left turn lane from SR 20/Buford Drive east to SR 324/Gravel Springs Road. This change gave us an additional 300 feet of left turn lane so motorists waiting to turn on 324 don't back up into traffic going straight through the intersection," explained Georgia DOT Board Member, Rudy Bowen.

Bowen represents the 7th Congressional District including Gwinnett County on the State Transportation Board.

The Quick Response program allows low cost, operational improvements to be made to the State Route system. Projects are identified by Georgia DOT Engineers or City/County Staff then managed through the Office of Local Grants. This improvement cost $71,671.
