Boys basketball: Knights rally to pick off Athens Christian

OAKWOOD -- The Johnson boys basketball team bounced back in style on Tuesday.

Just one day after falling to Class AAA sixth-ranked Buford, the Knights notched a 76-67 win over Class A second-ranked Athens Christian in Oakwood.

Athens Christian jumped out 23-18 after the first quarter, and led 37-33 at half. Johnson outscored Athens 21-19 in the third quarter but still trailed 56-54 heading into the final eight minutes. The final quarter proved a thriller, as Johnson closed the game on a 14-5 run for the win.

James Hodges scored a game-high 28 points -- 22 in the second half -- and 12 rebounds to pace the Knights (15-4). Ty Cockfield added 13 points with eight rebounds and five assists, while Justin Jones and Carter Cagle both chipped in 11 points and four rebounds apiece. Drew Dunham scored three points but also dished out 10 assists.

Athens Christian (14-3) was led by Will Jackson with 23 points, Demetrius McWhorter with 22 points, and Christ Tate with 16 points.

Johnson is back in action at Eastside on Friday at 7:30 in a battle for first place in Region 8-AAAA.
