South Forsyth group studies the idea of new city

CUMMING - Citing, among other things, a need for more representation and an identity, a group of south Forsyth County citizens are exploring the idea of a new city.

The Sharon Springs Alliance officially began last fall. Member Phillip Barlag said it's just an idea to study at present.

"There seems to be a little bit of a growing dissatisfaction with some of the choices made on our behalf by people we don't have the opportunity to directly elect or influence," Barlag said.

As per law, the organization hopes to commission a feasibility study.

They chose the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia.

"It's a $30,000 study. It takes about six months to do, so hopefully over the next 12 months we will raise the money. We're an entirely volunteer organization," Barlag said.

He said they don't know if forming the county's second city is the right answer, but that it's worth exploring.
