Southeast Ga. fire chief on leave after DUI charge

SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (AP) A southeast Georgia fire chief has been placed on leave after being charged with driving under the influence.

The Savannah Morning News reports the Georgia State Patrol arrested Springfield Fire Chief Travis Craig Zittrouer early Saturday and charged him with DUI and speeding. Springfield is a city of about 2,800 people in Effingham County northwest of Savannah.

City Manager Brett Bennett says he placed the fire chief on administrative leave while he reviews the arrest. It was not known if Zittrouer had an attorney.

Zittrouer has been was honored earlier last week for exceptional service while responding to a triple fatal car wreck in November.
