LAWRENCEVILLE - In the state of the county address Thursday, Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash discussed jobs, businesses and the future of the county.

"We are seeing signs of improvement in the economy," Nash said on WDUN's Afternoon News Wrap Thursday. "For the first time in several years, we expect that the value of the tax digest will not shrink, in fact, we expect it to increase a little bit."

Nash's main goals were to plan for the future, including the upcoming bicentennial of the county. "Gwinnett County will be celebrating its bicentennials in December of 2018, so just a little less than five years from now," said Nash. "Thinking about that, it occurred to me that we really need to be focusing on planning and preparing Gwinnett for its next hundred years."

Nash also said that business is the key to the economic future and developed a task force to help the county make and reach business goals. "We are definitely focused on trying to make Gwinnett County as business-friendly as we can, creating jobs and encouraging business activity is very important to us," said Nash.

"We will be forming a task force, made up of business owners and managers to work with us in trying to determine what we can do to help the businesses in Gwinnett County," Nash said. "One thing specifically they'll be asked to do is to look at all the county's processes and regulations to see where we may be able to make it easier for businesses."

Nash also mentioned a community outreach program. "We've funded within our 2014 budget, which was adopted last week, a community outreach initiative," said Nash. "Our intent is to design that program to reach out to diverse communities within the county."

"We really need to have everybody involved... in building Gwinnett County for the next century," Nash said.

The full address is available through the county's television station.
