'Promising' treatments for Alzheimer's to be discussed in Dahlonega

DAHLONEGA - Alzheimer's is a little-understood condition with a far-reaching impact. One in eight older Americans are affected, and it is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. The prognosis for Alzheimer's patients is grim, as the disease is progressive. Very few effective treatments have been developed for the disease, leaving those diagnosed and their families feeling little hope.<br /> &#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;<br /> Dr. William Frey II, professor at the University of Minnesota and Founder and Co- Director of the Alzheimer's Research Center at Regions Hospital, has developed an innovative new treatment that's bringing hope to patients with Alzheimer's and other brain disorders. The treatment is being employed by Dr. Frey and his staff at the Alzheimer's Research Center, and is called "intranasal insulin." This treatment essentially involves a nose spray through which insulin is introduced to the body, and has shown to, "improve the memory, attention and functioning of Alzheimer's patients." Because of the efforts of Dr. Frey, the federal government has now named intranasal insulin, "as one of the most promising potential treatments for Alzheimer's."<br /> &#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;&#8203;<br /> Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega will be providing a chance for people in Northeast Georgia to hear Dr. Frey talk about his groundbreaking research and treatment options for patients with Alzheimer's.
