OAKWOOD - Oakwood Police said no one was hurt when a lone gunman robbed the Sun Trust bank branch off Mundy Mill Road in Oakwood Wednesday morning.

Police investigator Danny Sridej said the robbery happened shortly after the bank opened.

"He (suspect) just walked right into the bank and approached the teller counter and handed the teller a small black bag and said put the money in it," Sridej said.

He described the suspect as a black man with a medium build, weighing between 170 and 185 pounds. Sridej said the gunman was in his late 30's or early 40's and between 5'10" and six feet tall. Police believe he had black hair and a mustache.

Sridej said the entire crime took less than two minutes with the suspect escaping on foot toward the shopping center behind the bank.

"We sent out K-9's and so forth, but we did not locate him."

Police also released a clothing description Wednesday afternoon.

"He was wearing a black ski mask with a black hooded jacket over a white t-shirt and blue jeans. He was carrying a black handgun, so I caution any citizen who notices the person, try not to make contact with the suspect because he's armed," Sridej said.

Hall County school officials said Oakwood Elementary School, Johnson High School and the Academies of Discovery were placed on lockdown for about an hour while law enforcement searched for the suspect.

In addition, the Gainesville campus of the University of North Georgia was placed on a precautionary shelter in-place, according to UNG spokeswoman Kate Maine.

Maine earlier said classes would resume at noon.

Hall County school system spokesman Gordon Higgins said all students and teachers were safe for the entirety of the lockdown period. The lockdown was enacted at 9:40 a.m. at Oakwood Elementary and Johnson High School and Academies of Discovery at 9:50 a.m. The lockdown was lifted around 10:45 a.m.
