GAINESVILLE - The theme for this year's King Day march and observance in Gainesville is "Promises to Keep and Miles to go Before We Sleep."

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Bill Coates, pastor of First Baptist Church on Green Street in Gainesville.

This year's march and other events - on Monday, Jan. 20 - will mark the 85th Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the 29th King Day federal holiday. However, the Gainesville celebrations began long before the third Monday in January was declared a federal holiday. This will be the 44th annual observance in Gainesville.

The event schedule is as follows:

March Assembly: 12:00 Sun Trust Bank downtown

March Start: 1:00

Program: 2:00 Fair Street Elementary School
Marchers in the Gainesville King Day celebration in 2012.
