Cornelia Police Chief Rick Darby said 24-year-old Yessica Tovare Salvidar and her young child were struck by the passenger headlight of a car while crossing the lane between Row 5 and Row 6 at 4:34 p.m.
"It looks like what happened is they were between rows and they were walking together to put the shopping cart up and were struck by a vehicle," Darby said.
Darby said a witness said the mother appeared to be paying attention to her child when the collision occurred.
The pedestrians were struck by a 2005 Mercury Sable driven by 84-year-old Ruth Jameson Goss of Clarkesville.
The child, whose name and age are not available, was not taken for treatment.
