Boys basketball: East Hall dodges late White County charge, 76-75

CLEVELAND -- An exhausted Coach Joe Dix of East Hall can finally exhale following a last second, 76-75 victory over White County on Friday in Cleveland.

Dix and his team, led by standout junior forward Kyvon Davenport's 18 points, 6 blocks and shear dominance on the glass, watched their double digit fourth quarter lead dwindle to nothing in the last seconds.

It was clear the tenacity of the White County warriors -- paced by senior forward Spencer Adams 19 points -- changed following a time out with 52 seconds left in the game. Following the timeout the warriors went on a 9-0 run -- all of which came on deep 3-point baskets -- to tie the contest at 75-75 with 5 seconds remaining.

After an East Hall timeout the Vikings inbounded the ball at half-court to Davenport. Facing a double-team, Davenport lowered his head and headed toward the hoop only to be quickly fouled and sent to the free throw line. Amid all the noise and distractions from the hometown White County crowd Davenport sank one of two free throws to give the Vikings a one-point lead and the dramatic victory.

"I told [Davenport] that he deserved to have the ball in his hands at the end of the game because of the plays you have made," said Dix. "In the that last possession we tried to get the into our best players hands Kyvon Davenport, he got fouled and made one out of two, he came through and got what we needed."

With the victory East Hall improves to 7-7, 3-2 Region 7 AAA play and stayed on pace for the race for the number two seed in the region.

White County must brush the loss off fast as they travel to Lumpkin County Saturday for a tough rivalry game.

East Hall, meanwhile, will face its oldest and most heated rival in Gainesville on Saturday in Rabbittown.
