GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Police said one of their own was in stable condition Friday afternoon following a traffic accident at a busy intersection in town.

Police Corporal Joe Britte said the female officer was hurt in the crash at the intersection of E.E. Butler and Jesse Jewell parkways around 1:00 p.m. He said she was turning right onto Jewell from Butler.

"An oncoming vehicle, which was a Chevrolet Avalanche, collided with the patrol vehicle as the patrol vehicle was responding to a panic alarm," Britte said.

Britte said the driver of the Avalanche did not require treatment. The officer was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

He said the initial panic alarm was handled.

"Yes, another officer diverted to the call and responded to it successfully," Britte said.

The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation.
