Cold snap, holidays causes blood shortage for LifeSouth

GAINESVILLE - The weather is warming up but the cold weather is still affecting LifeSouth. The cold snap and the holiday season has decreased the amount of donations, according to District Community Director John Andrews.

"Currently, because of the cold weather, the extreme cold that we've had as well as the holidays, the blood supply is at an emergency level where the hospitals only have a two day supply," said Andrews.

Andrews says that all blood types are needed, but A negative, B negative and O negative are needed the most.

"Typically we need about 750 units per week," said Andrews. "And we're about 50 percent of what we normally would be this time of week so it's significant, but we've had the cold snap."

Several blood drives are scheduled in the state, including one in Lawrenceville on January 11th at ReptiCon on Sugarloaf Parkway. Other drives are scheduled in Lilburn, Atlanta and Duluth.

Andrews says those wishing to donate can find a blood drive through their website or schedule an appointment at their office, including the office in Gainesville on McEver Road. More location information is linked below.
