Investigation reveals Flowery Branch man unarmed in shootout

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County police today said that a Flowery Branch stabbing suspect shot and killed by police last weekend was unarmed.

The investigation revealed that Robert Coleman allegedly attacked officers during a burglary in process on Smokemist Trace in Lawrenceville was not armed and therefore, did not shoot and wound one of the officers. Both officers fired at the 30 year old after he charged and attacked one of the officers. Coleman died on scene.

One officer was shot in the leg, however the injury is non-life-threatening. The shot was considered "friendly fire" according to a release from the Gwinnett County Police Department, however which officer fired that shot is unknown.

The shootout is linked to a stabbing on Willow Wood Way in Lawrenceville. The victim was stabbed at some point during a party at the residence, allegedly by Coleman.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
