BRASELTON - Residents in the south end of Hall County can look forward to additional law enforcement presence now that the county has finalized plans for a sheriff's office precinct in Braselton.

Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch appeared at Monday afternoon's county commission work session, outlining details of the purchase of the facility at 7345 Cody Drive. The 10,000-square-foot building, which was once a daycare center, sits on two acres of land.

"We got it at a super price - there's no way we could have built anything like that," said Couch. "Sixty nine dollars a square foot is what we paid for this building and it would cost about $126 to $128 a square foot if you built it."

The $700,000 will come from SPLOST VI funds, according to a statement issued by the Hall County Sheriff's Office earlier in the day. Money for renovation of the building will come from impact fees.

Couch said finding a location for a South Hall Headquarters was one of his goals when he took office.

"It's a busy area, it's a large community that is continuing to grow, and in anticipating the needs for the future, we were looking at obtaining a location somewhere around the Spout Springs area," said Couch.

The facility will provide easy access to Friendship, Spouts Springs and Thompson Mill roads as well as the new Lanier Islands Parkway.

Couch anticipates about 40-50 personnel will work at the new facility once it is renovated, but he said he won't hire additional employees.

"At this time we'll use the current staff that we have. It's just reallocation of personnel to better suit the needs of the community."
