GAINESVILLE - Two people were seriously hurt in a single-vehicle wreck off Gillsville Highway in Hall County Sunday afternoon.

According to Cpl. C.E. Parker, assistant post commander of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville, the wreck at 2:42 p.m. involved a 1997 Honda Accord driven by a 16-year-old female and occurred on Pinedale Road.

"It was described that the 16-year-old was learning how to operate a manual transmission," Parker said.

"When the vehicle approached the intersection of Willow Wind Drive, it failed to stop for the stop sign, crossed the roadway and struck an embankment," Parker said.

Parker said the car went airborne before striking a tree with its front.

The driver, who was restrained by a safety belt, suffered minor injuries.

The front-seat passenger and vehicle owner, 31-year-old Oscar Bermudez of Gainesville, was unrestrained and suffered a serious head injury and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

"The rear passenger, Diana Serrano, age unknown, was unrestrained and ejected through the front windshield," Parker said.

Serrano was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta with serious injuries, Parker said.

"Charges are pending at this time against the 16-year-old female until the status of the injuries is determined," Parker said.

GSP routinely does not release the names of minor drivers involved in wrecks.
