Tigers rally to beat George Walton in 8-A opener

MONROE -- Commerce scored the final 17 points, including 10 fourth quarter points, to pull away for a 31-21 win over Georgia Walton Academy Friday night in both teams' Region 8-A openers.

Caleb Brooks scored on a 3-yard run and Nahum Mendoza drilled a 37-yard field goal for the Tigers (3-2, 1-0 Region 8-A) in the final period.

Brooks' score was set up by a 79-yard interception return by Grant Mayberry.

Chance McClure scored on a 9-yard in the first quarter and Jamir Walton added a 9-yard TD run in the second quarter. McClure would add his second TD of the game with a 16-yard run to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive to tie the game at 21.

Stanley Williams paced George Walton (3-2, 0-1) with 220 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 64, 63, and 31 yards.

The Tigers next will travel to Athens Academy next week in another Region 8-A battle.
