JEFFERSON - The newly reconstructed bridge on Galilee Church Road, over the Middle Oconee River, is now open for traffic.

The bridge was closed Januarary 2 of this year for demolition and construction. The original bridge outlived it's life expentancty but did not meet current design standards.

The new bridge has imporved safety and efficiency - it has been raised to remove the trough approaching the bridge and features wider shoulders.

The shoulders are still being completed and the shoulders on the road way will be closed while crews finish the shoulders.

The full project consists of 0.23 miles of new roadway and the bridge. The bridge is 285 feet long and 38 feet wide. There are two 11 feet wide travel lanes and 6 feet wide shoulders. The project cost about $1.5 million.

Closing the bridge allowed the project to be completed in less than half the time. Closing the bridge instead of building the new bridge parallel while the old bridge was open also saved roughly $1 million.
