Soldier from Cherokee Co. killed in Afghanistan

WOODSTOCK - A soldier from north Georgia has been killed in Afghanistan.

Officials with the Department of Defense said 23-year-old Spc. Joshua J. Strickland of Woodstock was among three soldiers who died Sept. 21 from wounds they suffered when their unit was attacked while conducting range training.

NATO officials said the shooter was an Afghan wearing a security forces uniform.

Also killed in the attack was 32-year-old Staff Sgt. Liam Jules Nevins of Denver; and 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Timothy R. McGill of Ramsey, N.J.

All were assigned to Special Forces units.

Strickland, a graduate of Etowah High School, was married and had three young children.
