Jackson County EMS Director Steve Nichols said crews were called to the scene just before 9:45 p.m. He said firefighters from Jackson Trail, West Jackson and the Jackson County CI Departments responded.
Firefighters told Fox 5 News the young man was hiding in a closet in his bedroom, so they were unable to locate him when they entered the home. They said they had to retreat when the roof of the house began to collapse on them.
The man's mother and stepfather were able to escape the house. Both were taken to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment, according to firefighters at the scene.
The home is a total loss, according to Nichols.
Nichols said the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office are conducting and investigation into the cause of the fire.
