WINDER - The fire that claimed the life of an 18-month old child early this morning in the Winder area is still under investigation.

According to Lt. Scott Dakin with the Barrow County Fire Department, the house was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived.

"We also at that time found four people inside the structure. We had a 50 year old male, a 22 year old female and a 16 year old female," Dakin said. The three were life-flighted to Grady Hospital in Atlanta. Another adult victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

"We had reports of a fifth victim still inside the structure," Dakin said. "Due to the heavy involvement of fire there was no hope of getting into the house to conduct any kind of a search [until] we were able to knock the fire down."

The fifth victim, the 18 month old child, had passed away by the time the fire was under control enough to search for her, according to Dakin.

The identities of the victims and their current conditions are not currently available.

Dankin also thanked Jackson County Fire Department for assisting them with water shuttle.
