Taylor was an avid railroad buff according to a friend, Sterling Callahan, who presented a 200 signature petition to honor Taylor at a well known downtown historic site.
"I wish to propose that the Engine 209 Park be renamed the Dick Taylor Railroad Park," Callahan told Council.
Callahan said Taylor helped restore Engine 209 located at West Academy Street and Jesse Jewell Parkway in 2004.
He added that it is within city policy to honor deceased persons by naming city properties after them.
SOLID WASTE CHANGE
City Council passed an amendment to the Solid Waste Ordinance that calls for city trash and recycling collection for single family homes in future gated communities and on private streets inside the city limits.
Public Works Director David Dockery said garbage service for residents on current private streets or gated subdivisions would remain the same.
"The point that I need to make is that this is moving forward, "Dockery said. "This does not affect existing private streets or gated communities."
Dockery said the amendment was aimed at consistency in future trash and recycling pick-up in Gainesville.
