WINDER - Downtown Winder continues to experience a flurry of activity as concrete panels are laid on Georgia Highway 11/Broad Street.

As of this week, contractors had laid 145 of 350 panels as the driving surface of the busy highway, said Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope.

"The eastbound lane of State Route 11 is complete except for a few sections for parking against the eastern curb of the roadway," said DOT District Engineer Bayne Smith. "These parking areas will be completed after all other panels are set in place."

The project currently is ahead of schedule.

The 0.72-mile project was awarded to G.P.'s Enterprises of Statham for $4,949,306.21. Completion is set for July 31, 2014.

Broad Street is being rebuilt from the ground up, with what DOT officials say will create a stronger driving surface that will last for decades.

Other aspects of the projects include new sidewalks, curb and gutter, benches, lighting and landscaping.

Nightly lane closures are announced on a weekly basis.
