CUMMING - A Forsyth County man is set to make an appearance in a Fulton County courtroom at 11 a.m. Friday following his arrest for allegedly making terroristic threats against a school.

Joseph "Joe" John Medved, 51, was arrested Thursday after he was overheard Wednesday night making a comment about "shooting up a school with a long rifle."

"[He] was at a medical facility in Fulton County and someone overheard him say that he was going to go shoot up a school," said Forsyth County Deputy Doug Rainwater. "That person... contacted Fulton County authorities."

Within hours of the comment, Medved attempted to purchase a rifle at a pawn shop in Forsyth County. He was deterred by a 24 hour background check wait, however, the check cleared on Thursday morning and Medved returned to the pawn shop and instead purchased a shotgun.

"The 24 hour background check wait is just in place for that reason," Rainwater said. "He had to come back this morning. But then again, he came back this morning and purchased the shotgun."

Rainwater said Medved was under surveillance because of the comment, but several passersby also reported that he was shooting his shotgun near the road.

"Some people called in because he went out into his front and side yard of his house and was shooting near the road," said Rainwater. "People on the roadway saw him shooting the shotgun - testing it out."

Following the shooting activity, Forsyth County authorities searched Medved's home on Goldmine Road in Cumming and found what they called a suspicious device in the basement. Rainwater said the device consisted of two aerosol cans taped together, with a cord coming from each end; nuts and bolts were scattered around the area where the 'device' was found.

Fulton County Sheriff's Office secured a warrant in Fulton County Thursday morning for the previously made threats. According to Rainwater, Medved was arrested around noon.

The case was a collective effort by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Marshall Service and the U.S. Joint Terrorism Task Force.
