SAVANNAH - Georgia Ports Authority officials say increased business has led to companies leasing more than 1 million square feet of distribution space in Fiscal Year 2013.

Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Curtis Foltz said during his State of the Ports speech Thursday that the agency handled record amounts of cargo this year. Foltz says the agency processed a record 27 million tons of materials, representing an increase of more than 651,000 tons from the previous year.

Foltz says a $186 million improvement plan between fiscal years 2013 and 2014 is aimed at keeping the agency competitive.

The agency is looking to deepen 30-miles of the Savannah River to make room for larger cargo ships and is awaiting word from Congress on whether it will increase funding for the $652 million project.
