ATLANTA - Republican Karen Handel has thrown a curveball in the early stages of Georgia's 2014 U.S. Senate race.

The former secretary of state faces a crowded Republican primary field vying to succeed Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who will retire. But Handel's latest radio ad isn't aimed at her fellow Republicans. Instead, she's blasting Democratic candidate Michelle Nunn for saying she'd have voted to support U.S. military action in Syria.

Handel says she would have opposed any intervention. She uses the ad as a way to tie Nunn to President Barack Obama, who is unpopular among white voters in Georgia. Handel calls the president's foreign policy a disaster and says his Syria policy is incoherent.

Nunn previously said the U.S. shouldn't allow foreign regimes to use chemical weapons against innocent civilians without consequences.
