The fire, in a double-wide mobile home at 660 Shenandoah Drive, Dahlonega, was reported at 5:35 p.m., said Glenn Allen of Georgia Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner Ralph Hudgens' office.
Lumpkin County Fire Chief David Wimpy said a woman and her dog were killed in the fire. The woman was later identified by Lumpkin County Coroner Ronald Fortner as 60 year old Janice Carpenter.
"Her body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy, which is standard procedure, to determine the cause of death," Allen said.
Wimpy said Lumpkin County crews, with some assistance from Cleveland Fire Department, were on the scene until late in the night.
"The residence received heavy damage to the roof and a back wall," Allen said. "The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, but investigators are leaning toward an electrical cause for the fire."
If her death is determined to be fire-related, the woman becomes the 90th fire fatality in the state thus far in 2013, Allen said.
"She did have a working smoke alarm inside the home," Allen said.
